Gmail

I got my first opportunity today to send out an invite. Don’t ask, it’s already gone. I’m kind of curious how Google determines who to give them to. BTW, my Gmail address is Q4RadioGuy@gmail.com just in case someone would like to email me there.

Erica’s Website

I’ve been trying to help Erica get stuff together to post on her website (http://www.ericaurich.com) the past few days. We’ve gotten most of the basic content up now (including pictures) and it’s just a matter of her deciding what she wants it to look like. I’ve used the same template over there that you are currently looking at, and I know that it isn’t what she will want long term, but it works for now. Oh well. When I head home next, I plan on setting up Dreamweaver on her computer so she can go in an edit the pages to her heart’s content, but for now I have done the editing for her.

Bug/Feature Tracking System

I just set up Mantis on Gollum to help me track my photo gallery program. It doesn’t have to be entirely for this one project, but that was the most relevant one at the time. You can find the bug tracker at bugs.quad4.org.

Internet Connection

Well, I’m really starting to debate with myself about whether I should get internet access at the apartment. Sure, it would be nice to browse the web, run portage updates, etc from home, but is it worth it at about $110 a month? It would have to be cable, as I can’t get DSL where I’m at, so that means no static IP address. If I get it, and it looks fairly stable (it seems to be based on what others are telling me) I will probably move Gollum to Longview with me. It would be nice to have physical access to the server again. Maybe I can convince someone to subsidize (hint, hint) my efforts if I move the server. The package I’m looking at is 1024Kb/s (128KB/s) down and 512Kb/s (64KB/s) up. The upstream is what I am most worried about if I move Gollum here. The internet connection in Houston seems to be capped somewhere around 60KB/s, so this should be reasonable.

My next big concern would be any port blocking that they have in effect (SMTP, IMAP, POP3, HTTP, SSH). From what I’ve been told, at least HTTP is open. None of my coworkers run any other services on their machines at home. The thing that really sucks is that I have to have “Standard Cable” before I can get cable internet. The cable pacakge alone is $45 a month. Ahhh! the internet package is about $65 a month on top of the tv. At least I’d be able to watch Stargate and my other shows (Alias, 24, CSI, Enterprise) this season from home. Of course that would probably prompt me to buy that TV tuner card I’ve been looking at. Why do I do this to myself!?

Movie Night

We watched another movie last night over at Lucky’s apartment. I must say that I was very skeptical about the movie choice, but I was willing to go along for the ride. We chose “50 First Dates” last night, something that had it just been me, I would not have picked. However, as the movie got started, I realized that it was more than just a ‘romance’ film, but stood out as a great comedy as well. Currently IMDB has it listed at 6.8/10, which isn’t bad, but it isn’t good either. If you are looking for a good laugh, this movie should do it for you.

PostgreSQL

Well, at the request of Lucky, I’ve installed PostgreSQL on Gollum. This is my first real experience with it and it is truly different than MySQL from an admin side. It seems that all my upgrades lately have come at the request of one of my users. I don’t suppose that’s a bad thing, is it? I’ve even put off upgrading some of the packages that portage is telling me are ready to go, but I am working on those as I type this entry. It looks like there are about 15 more packages to go (including gcc, Apache and PHP) before it’s done.

Web Mail

Oh ya! I just took one of John Spiegel’s reccomendations and set up SquirrelMail on Gollum. It looks pretty good so far, although I can’t say that I’ve put it through every situation yet. For those with mail accounts on my machine, visit mail.quad4.org to use it. Make sure you login like I’ve instructed you for every other client.

Stupid Server

Ya, ok, it’s really my fault. I’ve been lazy and haven’t set Gollum up with a static IP address, so every once in a while he grabs a different IP from our little Linksys router and totally messes up all my port forwarding stuff. Oh well, I walked my mother through getting it all straightened out (Thanks Mom!) so we should be ok for a while.
