Internet Connection

Well, I’m really starting to debate with myself about whether I should get internet access at the apartment. Sure, it would be nice to browse the web, run portage updates, etc from home, but is it worth it at about $110 a month? It would have to be cable, as I can’t get DSL where I’m at, so that means no static IP address. If I get it, and it looks fairly stable (it seems to be based on what others are telling me) I will probably move Gollum to Longview with me. It would be nice to have physical access to the server again. Maybe I can convince someone to subsidize (hint, hint) my efforts if I move the server. The package I’m looking at is 1024Kb/s (128KB/s) down and 512Kb/s (64KB/s) up. The upstream is what I am most worried about if I move Gollum here. The internet connection in Houston seems to be capped somewhere around 60KB/s, so this should be reasonable.

My next big concern would be any port blocking that they have in effect (SMTP, IMAP, POP3, HTTP, SSH). From what I’ve been told, at least HTTP is open. None of my coworkers run any other services on their machines at home. The thing that really sucks is that I have to have “Standard Cable” before I can get cable internet. The cable pacakge alone is $45 a month. Ahhh! the internet package is about $65 a month on top of the tv. At least I’d be able to watch Stargate and my other shows (Alias, 24, CSI, Enterprise) this season from home. Of course that would probably prompt me to buy that TV tuner card I’ve been looking at. Why do I do this to myself!?

Dude, I feel the same way. I had to get DirecTV to get “cable” Internet (a shared T1 in my apartment building–shared with 15 people) or a packaged phone deal to get DSL. Then I had to get a TV so I could use the DirecTV I am paying for… grrr… Such a waste. Sometimes I think I should have a luddite home with books only.

And that’s just my apartment.. don’t get me started on looking for a car.
