“A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof was to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.”
“It is known that there is an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the product of a deranged imagination.”
A little Doulgas Adams for this Monday afternoon.
Well, we found out yesterday that Carl Bridges isn’t going to be able to make camp this year. This is going to throw alot of work back on dad and myself that we had offloaded onto Carl a few years ago. Basically it means that I’m not going to be able to take nearly as many photos this year as I’d hoped. Perhaps that’s a good thing.
On a side note, I converted the JROTC site over to a Wordpress install completely yesterday. It took me a while to figure out how to handle the ‘Pages’ the way I really wanted to, but it is all working now. I’m now in the process of working on the TJOC site. I’d like to move it over to a Wordpress install as well, since it isn’t anything more than a few pages and occasional news items. I think it will work even better than WP did for the JROTC site.
HOUSTON - A group of engineers was honored Tuesday for concocting a plan using plastic bags, cardboard and duct tape to save Apollo 13’s astronauts after their spacecraft was crippled by an explosion 35 years ago.
I’m in the process of moving the jrotc site over into Wordpress entirely. All it has really been for the last few years is an announcement board, and Wordpress can handle that just fine. There are a couple of static pages, so I have started messing with WP ‘Pages’ for the first time. I really don’t like that my .htaccess file has to be updated everytime I add a new page. Very clunky.
I finally got all my email downloaded from Gmail. When the dust settled I counted more than 50,000 emails accounting for about 426MB (or about 8.72KB each on average). That’s a fair bit of email for having used Gmail for less than a year (July 1, 2004 - now).
While I was grabbing all my old mail, I also setup Gmail to start forwarding a copy of all my emails to an account that I host, just to have a backup (and so I don’t have to use their POP3 service to grab said backup). It’s not that I don’t trust Google, but I’d much rather have a copy myself that I can index and search even offline.
I just finished putting together a parts list for Erica’s new computer. The list is far from final at this point, as I threw a fair bit of stuff into it “just because” and we may decide to pull some of that back out or look for lower cost alternatives.
I’m still not sure that I want to only put an 80GB drive in the machine (there will actually be two, in a RAID mirror) when I can get a better price point with much larger drives. I’m just trying to keep the overall cost down at this point. Oh well, any comments?
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Reuters) - Police in a Vancouver suburb issued an unusual warning to drivers on Monday: If you run out fuel, do not lay down on the road to get assistance.
I never do these things, but I saw this one on Runyon’s livejournal and couldn’t resist.
