I finally got all my email downloaded from Gmail. When the dust settled I counted more than 50,000 emails accounting for about 426MB (or about 8.72KB each on average). That’s a fair bit of email for having used Gmail for less than a year (July 1, 2004 – now).
While I was grabbing all my old mail, I also setup Gmail to start forwarding a copy of all my emails to an account that I host, just to have a backup (and so I don’t have to use their POP3 service to grab said backup). It’s not that I don’t trust Google, but I’d much rather have a copy myself that I can index and search even offline.
