Laptop on the way

It looks like my laptop has shipped … from Shanghai. It seems to be currently on the way to Anchorage and I have no ETA in Longview. UPS just updated their tracking info for my package with a new notice saying “THE RECEIVER REQUESTS UPS TO HOLD THIS SHPT AND CONTACT THEM FOR SPECIFIC INFORMATION BEFORE CUSTOMS CLEARANCE”. I hope that doesn’t mean an unreasonably long delay once it hits Anchorage.

Laptop Computer

So … I finally took the plunge and bought a laptop. It’s an IBM ThinkPad R50e and looks like it will fit nicely. Thanks to John’s IBM discount (which he’s more than willing to share should anyone else be looking at IBM products) I got right at $200 off my purchase. Without that discount I wouldn’t have bought this.

Gnome 2.10 in Portage

Looks like Gnome 2.10 finally made its way (unmasked) into Portage today. I’m in the process of compiling it and a few other things here at work. I’m kicking the process off at the apartment as well, so hopefully it will be well on the way to completion by the time I get home tonight.

The Linux Kernel Archives

The new servers were donated by Hewlett-Packard, and are each quad Opterons with 24 gigabytes of RAM and 10 terabytes of disk space. Internet Systems Consortium, Inc. donates the bandwidth in the form of two independent gigabit-connected datacenters, PAIX Palo Alto and e200paul in San Francisco.

It’s a great read … check the rest out at http://kerneltrap.org/node/5070.
